Beyond "hella"

When the girls out here— and the guy I just held the door for— say "thank you," they in fact say "thenk yow", or "think yo," or something between, and then they shuffle off in their flip-flops.  I can't reproduce this pronunciation at all; I've only ever heard it on this coast.  Got any data on this?

I don't recognize this pronunciation, and I've been here hella long. Based on the flip-flop evidence, I suspect you've been encountering members of the SoCal diaspora, not native to the northern region.

I'd certainly buy that hypothesis, since the SoCal diaspora seems to use most of the universities I've attended here as regional bases of operations. But maybe the local youth are being infected to some extent? I don't know— how are north-south relations these days?

No-So relations seem pretty much like they've always been: northerners smug, disparaging, and resentful, southerners don't care.
